eBook orders are charged as soon as the order is placed. Sales tax is assessed based on the billing address. Because the order path of eBooks is streamlined to provide the quickest download experience to our customers, there is no option to indicate the tax exempt status during the order process at this time.
In accordance with applicable law, Barnes & Noble collects tax in all states based on the appropriate rate of sales tax in each state. Federal tax is added to all orders delivered in Canada. Tax exempt entities do not have to provide any documentation for orders for states that have no sales tax.
If the billing address for your eBook order is in a taxable state and you are tax-exempt, please follow our procedures below:
After you place your first order, please fax us a copy of your tax exempt certificate. You may fax this information to 201-559-3883 Attn: Tax Exempt. Your order number must be included.
After completing each eBook order that should be tax exempt, please email us at taxes@bn.com. Customers who previously provided their tax exempt information will also be required to contact us for a tax refund after each eBook order is completed.
