Libraries, schools, not-for-profits, and other qualified groups and individuals may place sales tax-exempt orders on bn.com, including tax exempt orders for eBooks.
To receive tax exemption for your eligible Barnes & Noble orders:
1. Sign in to bn.com by entering your email address on the Sign In screen and the six-digit code that is sent to you. This will create an account with that email address.
2. Once your account has been created, email Taxes@bn.com with:
- A valid tax exemption certificate(s) for each state in which you qualify.
- The email address used to sign in to bn.com.
After your documentation has been reviewed and approved, we will notify you when your account is enabled for tax-exempt ordering. You may then place qualifying orders shipping to states where you are tax exempt using the designated email address.
You can place orders before your tax exemption is approved. Once the approval is processed, send the order numbers to taxes@bn.com and you will receive an email with your tax refund details.
IMPORTANT: If you are placing an order that does not qualify for tax exemption, you must do so using a separate bn.com account with a different email address that has not been exempted.
General Services Administration (GSA) Card
A GSA card refers to a GSA SmartPay charge card used by authorized federal employees to make official government purchases and travel expenses.
If you are using a GSA card, you must first go through the process to have your bn.com account set up as tax exempt.
Please note: In accordance with applicable law, Barnes & Noble collects tax in most states, based on the appropriate rate of sales tax in each state. Federal tax is added to all orders delivered in Canada. We display this tax as GST (Goods and Services Tax).
The following states have no sales tax:
- Alaska
- Delaware
- Montana
- New Hampshire
- Oregon
Tax exempt entities do not have to provide any documentation for orders shipping to states that have no sales tax.
