Barnes & Noble now offers Premium Membership for Educators, providing the same store and bn.com benefits as our paid Premium Membership (excluding the free tote bag each year) for free to K-12 educators. Visit your local Barnes & Noble, Tattered Cover, Paper Source, or Books Inc store with a valid school or institutional ID or pay stub and valid photo ID to join Premium Membership for Educators. If the school ID or other proof of employment provided does not contain a photo, a valid government-issued ID will also be required.
Eligibility
Premium Membership for Educators provides a free one-year term of Premium Membership to Educators employed by an accredited Grade K-12 public, private, or parochial school. Those eligible include but are not limited to teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, principals, and reading coaches.
- Not eligible: Homeschoolers, pre-schoolers, higher education, volunteers, support staff, and substitute, student or retired teachers.

- Your Membership will be upgraded to Premium Membership for Educators for free upon enrollment
- Paid Premium Membership
- Your free year of Premium Membership for Educators will be added on to your existing Premium Membership and extend your expiration date by one year at no cost.
- Former BN Educator Discount Member currently receiving free Premium Membership
- Your existing Membership will continue through its expiration date, at which point you can renew for a free Premium Membership for Educators term
Former Members of the BN Educator Discount Program
When the Barnes & Noble Educator Discount program ended in 2023, we offered customers who were active Educator Members at the time a free year of Premium Membership. Subsquently, we renewed those Memberships for free each year. Those Memberships have now been integrated into Premium Membership for Educators.
To continue receiving the Premium Membership for Educators for free beyond your current expiration date, you can renew at any time within 30 days of your expiration date. You will need to provide proof of employment at an eligible K-12 institution, such as a School ID or paystub along with a valid photo ID.
Additional Information
- Online enrollment is not available for Premium Membership for Educators. All enrollments must occur in a Barnes & Noble, Books, Inc., Paper Source, or Tattered Cover store.
- Email addresses with a .edu domain cannot be used as the email address on file with the Membership.
- Automatic renewal is turned off for Premium Membership for Educators
